  • Retailers increase recruitment to meet Christmas demand
    As Christmas approaches, leading retailers have stepped up recruitment to meet demand and ensure they are ‘bigger and better’ than competitors. Recent research from RetailChoice revealed that 85% of retailers intended on hiring Christmas staff this year, with half planning on starting to recruit temporary staff before 13th One in five (18%) of retailers also anticipated increasing their entire workforce by at least 60% in order to staff their stores.
  • Businesses in the tourism sector should become dementia-friendly to increase revenue and gain a competitive advantage
    In partnership with Alzheimer’s Society, VisitEngland and Visit Scotland have launched a new guide to help tourism businesses become more dementia-friendly. The Dementia-Friendly Tourism Guide outlines the benefits of accommodating visitors living with dementia, such as increased revenue, improved customer service and an enhanced reputation, as well as improving the seasonal spread. The suggestions within the guide have the potential to positively impact the lives of 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK.
  • Former Thomas Cook employees demand an inquiry into the company’s collapse
    Thomas Cook staff, who have been left unemployed following the company’s collapse, have gathered on Downing Street to demand a full inquiry. Workers said they felt ‘abandoned’ by the government and called for answers as to why the business was allowed to collapse, as well as an explanation for its inaction in the run-up. Thomas Cook asked the government for help to make their £200,000,000 deadline but were refused.
  • UK retailers urge for a Brexit deal after suffering the worst September on record
    According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), a 1.3% drop in sales in September meant the annual increase in activity dropped to just 0.2%, which is its lowest level since 1995. Retailers have claimed this shows that consumers are reluctant to spend money at a time of heightened political and economic uncertainty. Helen Dickinson, BRC’s chief executive, said that clarity is needed on future trading relationships and highlighted the importance of leaving the EU with a deal.
  • Chefs in the hospitality sector should be given the freedom to express their skills
    When chefs are allowed to express their skills, they are happier in the workplace and likely to stay for longer, suggests research from The Caterer and Searcys. This comes at a time when employers in the hospitality sector are finding it increasingly challenging to hire and retain chefs. Misconceptions about the industry, low pay and long hours have been cited as a large part of the problem, with 46% of chefs also concerned about a lack of creativity in the workplace. When asked why chefs joined the hospitality industry, creativity was a key factor – scoring highly across all age ranges.
