In an ever-growing, competitive market, we listen, understand and use our market knowledge to develop smart solutions using next generation technology to address end users’ needs.

What’s happening in 2019?

The Not-For-Profit sector – sometimes referred to as the Charity or Third sector – is all about creating social wealth. Within the UK, there are over 166,800 organisations that sit in this category.

There are a wide range of issue and trends affecting the sector today.

  • Although cash is still the most common way people give money to charity, digital payments are on the rise
In 2018, it was identified that contactless payments have increased by 97% meaning that, for the first time in UK history, debit card payments became more common than cash. Not-For-Profit organisations are therefore looking to adapt to this new, digital way of operating.
  • People expect seamless interaction with brands – even from the Not-For-Profit sector
Customers and stakeholders now expect seamless interaction with brands – even from the Not-For-Profit sector. It’s more crucial than ever that organisations adopt technology that maintains pace with the competition. Through experiences that are smart, seamless and personalised, trust and loyalty can be built.
  • Charities remain under scrutiny from the media, so building and rebuilding confidence through transparency is a key priority
Research from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) showed that the proportion of UK people who gave money to charity in 2018 dropped to 57%. This follows a number of scandals within the sector that have had a detrimental effect on trust.
  • The fight for greater diversity continues
Since Gender Pay Gap legislation was introduced, diversity in the workplace has become a commonly discussed topic. Within the Not-For-Profit sector, understanding of the benefits of a diverse workplace has undoubtedly grown. Action to support this thinking is now a key focus, as demonstrated by the Institute of Fundraising’s publication of its Manifesto for Change and launch of the Change Collective.
  • The use of voice technology is increasing in importance
It’s estimated that by 2020, 50% of all internet searches will be carried out by voice, which is perhaps unsurprising considering the number of voice-enabled devices available in people’s homes and pockets. Charities are looking to expand into this space, with British Heart Foundation enabling donations through Amazon Alexa and Wizz-Kids integrating with Transport for London’s API to replicate its route planner instructions in voice-enabled platforms.

Blue Octopus works with clients across the Not-For-Profit sector, providing forward-thinking talent solutions and helping them stay relevant in a world that’s moving at pace.
