JRF JRHT 2020 Graduate Internship Programme

Millions of people are locked in poverty in the UK. We don’t believe that’s right. That’s why we’ve made it our mission to solve it. JRF’s new strategy is to work alongside others to build public and political will for change and demand for solutions. At JRHT our mission is to build and develop strong empowered communities without poverty or isolation, especially in the communities where we provide housing and care, which includes York and Hartlepool. We are transforming to an outcomes-focused organisation, strengthening our learning culture and commitment to measuring what matters.

Two placements are open to everyone regardless of age, disability, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, religion or belief, race, sex, sexual orientation, trans status or social economic background. We positively encourage applications from those with experience of living in poverty. We are also committed to making reasonable adjustments for disabled people. The placements are:

1. Transforming our financial reporting. (York) Working in the central Finance function you will be carrying out user lead research that will enable us to overhaul our financial reporting, creating dashboards, charts and scorecards.

2. Hartlepool Action Lab (Hartlepool) Conducting a dedicated piece of research and engagement designed to understand the situation of local people now, in light of the coronavirus crisis.

The other four placements are offered as part of a positive action initiative to support our strategy to diversify the ethnicity of our workforce as Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people are significantly under-represented. They are only available to people who identify as having heritage from BAME groups. This initiative is supported by Section 158 of the Equalities Act 2010. The placements are:

3. Digital workplace project. (York) You will join the project team to review the employee experience in our offices, meeting spaces and technology and make recommendations on how these can be reshaped to offer a joined up physical and digital working environment.

4. Developing our knowledge base on poverty in the UK. (York or London) You will work with the evidence and impact team in either analysis, economics or research into our key policy areas of work, housing and social security.

5. Supporting the housing outcome scheme. (York or London) Housing costs are out of sync with incomes in many parts of the UK; working with colleagues within JRF you will develop a road map for JRF’s engagement in this area.

6. Change Communications for JRF’s Digital Transformation. (York or London) We are improving our digital communication channels, products and services through great design. You will carry out invaluable research for several of our development canvasses and communicate updates outwards in a consistent and engaging way.

To succeed you will be inquisitive, passionate about making a difference, have a creative streak and an inclusive approach. Your communication skills will be used to the full as will your ability to work in collaboration with others, and above all an interest in strengthening communities and solving poverty will be taken as read.

In return you will get the opportunity to work in an organisation that truly believes we can make a difference. You will get a full induction plus further training and development in line with your area of focus; line management support from a nominated member of staff; access to our in-house mentoring scheme and where appropriate visits to outside organisations and events.

A real living wage of £9.30 an hour equating to £8,463 over the duration of the internship, if you are based in London you will also receive an allowance of £2,500 as well as access to an interest free season ticket loan for travel and a host of other benefits.

If this sounds like your cup of tea then drop us a line – you will need to download a short application form and email it along with your current CV and completed diversity monitoring form to interns@jrf.org.uk

You can apply for more than one placement. However, we will require a separate application on each occasion, and you must meet the criteria for applying.

Closing date: Sunday 09 August 2020

Partly completed applications or those not consisting of the 3 specified documents will not be considered.

The selection process will consist of an application form sift, a telephone interview and then if successful a presentation and interview, to be held week commencing 24 August 2020. During the COVID-19 restrictions the successful applicants will be fully supported to work from home for an initial period where restrictions on non-essential travel are in place.
